Moving to Southeast Asia changed far more than my monthly budget. It gave me distance from the assumptions I had absorbed about what a business owner’s life was supposed to look like.
I could lower my personal burn rate, focus on the work, and build without needing every month to fund an expensive lifestyle. That runway was valuable. The perspective was even more valuable.
Runway improves your decisions
When every expense is urgent, you are tempted to chase shortcuts and force growth. More runway gives good strategies time to work and makes it easier to walk away from bad customers, bad suppliers, and bad opportunities.
Location freedom still needs structure
- Keep fixed working hours across the time zones that matter.
- Document work so the business does not rely on being online all day.
- Build reliable communication with your team and suppliers.
- Know the tax, visa, banking, and insurance rules before moving.
Do it for the life, not the photo
Living abroad is not an endless vacation. It comes with tradeoffs, distance from family, bureaucracy, and unfamiliar systems. For me, it was also where I met my wife and built a life I could not have planned in advance.
The useful question is not whether everyone should move to Asia. It is whether your current costs and assumptions are buying a life you actually want.
